Rural Conservation
Our Main Goal and Agenda
CCWHC’s main goal is to conserve, preserve and protect the rural character of Western Howard County -- the Rural West -- as set forth in the County’s chief policy document – the General Plan. Our agenda is:
- To oppose commercial and other developments that would negatively change the rural character of the County’s largest area of agricultural preservation, rural conservation and rural residential land that stretches over nearly 70,000 acres from the Route #97 Corridor to the County’s western boundary.
- To pursue when appropriate, legal action to prevent commercial and other developments that are “out-of-character” with the Rural West’s agricultural, conservation and rural residential environment.
- To advocate and seek expeditious comprehensive rezoning of commercial properties in Western Howard County in keeping with the General Plan’s development policies for the Rural West
- To promote the conservation, preservation and protection of the Rural West as an important way to achieve the goals of Maryland’s Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation policy, among them the goals “to save our most valuable remaining natural resources before they are lost forever,” and “to save taxpayers millions of dollars by not building the infrastructure required to support it.”
- To prepare and participate in the debate and development of the County’s 2010 General Plan and the subsequent Comprehensive Rezoning Plan 2012-13.
- To seek the addition of more Rural West scenic roads to the County’s scenic road inventory and to advocate strengthening of our Scenic Roads Law.
